House Gordon’s Bay – Double Storey

Location: Gordon’s Bay, Western Cape

Type: Residential

Date: Project in progress

Project Description:

This double storey house becomes a feature in its topography.  The brief entailed a modern house with articulated linear, geometric forms.  The design combined flat roofs at various heights to define different spaces and create a visual break against the backdrop of the Gordon’s Bay Mountain on the South.

Sightlines to surrounding panoramic views of the sea and Helderberg Mountains at the North, established the leveled-out floor level in order to exploit views from the site to its fullest.

Service spaces are placed at the South.  The living area and all the bedrooms are orientated to the North – featuring large openings which accentuates the play between solids and voids. The exterior entertainment area is centrally placed between these north-facing adjacent spaces to create some shelter against the famous Gordon’s Bay wind.

The continuous planter that wraps around the two street-facing facades does do not only enable uncompromised private spaces but also enfold and reunify the site with the natural context.
